Corcovado

Corcovado is deceptive. The melody is calm, almost whispered, so most players run one scale over the whole thing and it sounds thin. Underneath, something else is going on: sixty chords moving through seven different centres, with ten diminished chords along the way.

The diminished chords are where people lose the thread. One shows up early, turns the phrase in a new direction, and gives no warning. Players going on instinct stumble exactly there — in the bar where the song sounded calmest.
